Vinyl disks and audio tapes have become increasingly obsolete over the last years, but they can still hold some good music and the effort of storing it in digital format is worth it. If you try to record it with conventional tools, you may not be pleased with the quality of the results. VinylStudio was created specifically for this purpose. It is an advanced recording tool which is capable of eliminating excess sound from the recordings to ensure a better quality. You can also use it to save the recordings in various audio formats or burn them directly to a CD or DVD and much more.

The software's setup kit is not large, so it can be downloaded and installed rapidly. It is available for Windows and Mac platforms and you can try it, free of charge, for a limited period of time. You will need to install the LAME MP3 encoder separately, if you do not have it, otherwise you will not be able to use some of the program's features.

The interface may look a bit confusing, at a first glance, due to the large number of options and multiple navigation tabs, but with a little patience you can start recording in no time. Each time you click something, a dialog will pop up with detailed instructions regarding what you need to do or what actions are recommended.

Before you record something, you need to specify a few details, like the artist's name, album release year or genre, because tapes or vinyl disks do not contain tag information. There are various options under the Record tab and they can be used for recording both tapes and vinyl disks. You can specify the speed of the record or tape and the speed of the turntable or deck. If you are recording a disk, you can set the program to wait until the needle is down. If you click the Record button, while this option is ticked, VinylStudio will not record anything until the needle touches the disk.

Recordings can be saved as audio files, in WAV, OGG, MP3, FLAC or AIFF format. You can choose to record individual tracks, one by one or the whole disk or tape. The saved files are displayed in a list, under the Record tab, named according to what information you provided at the beginning.

VinylStudio comes with a built-in track splitter, which may come in handy if you record the whole tape in one file. It displays the recording's waveform and you can add brake points anywhere you want. The software will automatically list the sounds between brake points, as separate tracks, above the wave form. A similar editing tool can be found under a different tab, but it can be used to clean up the audio track by eliminating clicks, hisses and other sounds. Once you create and clean up your tracks, you can save them on your hard drive, or burn them to an audio or MP3 CD or a DVD.

Pros

VinylStudio includes a wide range of tools, nut just for recording, but for editing audio tracks as well. Splitting or cleaning up the recordings is not difficult. There are plenty of tool tips and hyperlinks which bring up the help file. The software is also capable of burning your recordings to a CD or DVD.

Cons

The large number of options may intimidate novice users. If you want to store your favorite music collection in digital format, VinylStudio is the perfect tool for this task. It offers everything you need to record tapes or vinyl disks and enhance the playback quality.
